Waxing Gibbous Moon (Three Nights to Full Moon)
The next morning, a phone call woke me.
“Hello?” I said groggily. I hadn’t even thought to check the display and see who it was. In my half-asleep state, I just grabbed my cell off the nightstand and accepted the call.
“Selene? It’s your mother.” Like I wouldn’t recognize her voice.
“Hi mom,” I grunted as I rolled over onto my stomach, pressing my face into the pillow as she spoke.
“Are you okay?” She asked worriedly.
“Yes, um, you woke me up. It’s…” I took the phone away from my ear and looked at the time, "Seven in the morning. You know I like to sleep in when I can.”
“Oh that’s right, I forgot,” I heard her laugh nervously. Then she got to the real reason she called. “I just wanted to know if you spoke with Mr. Lewis.”
I covered my head with my blanket, even though it wouldn’t have any affect. “Yes, I went over to his house for dinner last night and I got to meet his family and everything.”
“So did you ask him if there’s a cure? If anyone knew, it would be him.” The hope in her voice pitched the tone about an octave higher. It made me cringe.
“Mom,” I said slowly, trying not to yell at her, “There is no cure for what I have because it’s not a disease. There will never be a cure, so just get used to it. I’m the one who has to live with it, not you.”
“I will find a way to fix this,” She whispered into the phone. I heard her sniffle. I’d made her cry, but I really didn’t care. She was pissing me off.
“Stop wasting your time and money,” I hung up the phone, wishing I could have the satisfaction of slamming it into a cradle, and tried to go back to sleep. Unfortunately, I was wide-awake.

A/N: Short chapter, it'll probably get merged with the next chapter, but for right now I'm leaving it this way. A little bit of character development between Selene and her mom. I kind of wanted to show where Selene's parents were on this whole issue. Her dad kind of ignores it, but her mom wants her baby to be whole and perfect again. Too bad that's not happening. :P
My mom always tells me it's her, like I can't read the caller ID or recognize her voice.
